ESCAPING PUPPET
Visiting the spiritual world of an Ancient Chinese Emperor
My stop-motion animation:
Length: 2.35 mins
‘Escaping’ is a process with open ending, and the ‘puppet’ here is Wanli, an emperor in Chinese history. He was surrounded and charged by many unbearably hypocritic officials. Out of his sensitive nature and hidden cowardice, though he bitterly bore a grudge towards them, he could not confront them. Therefore, he chose to escape from them and isolated himself for 20 years. When I think of him, I conceive what he was thinking. He might sometimes lost in the daydream to console his decaying heart, because apart from this spiritual escape, he was lucid enough in reality to know he could hope no more. Hence, when ‘escaped’ is inaccessible, ‘escaping’ without a finale is already the best ending for him. I am a storyteller in this project, and I know it’s not a motivating we-can-do-it story. Leave the great heroes to historians, give yourself an outlet for fragility.
